Ruby Red Dress has fast become one of the favourite vintage clothing stores in Prahran, and will be one of the contributors at the RAW Sustainable Fashion Parade, as part of this year’s Melbourne Spring Fashion Week.

This adorable shop hidden just off Chapel St is run by Sharon and Emily, (mother-daughter team) which houses mainly 1980s fashion and accessories and keeps prices affordable…which sadly is becoming less and less the case as the demand for vintage soars.

After being asked to put together a handful of looks to send down the runway, the ladies at this shop have thought carefully about the main concept behind the show itself, sustainability. “In terms of fashion, I think of sustainability as a particular look that can stand the test of time… not only that the garment itself is so well made that it lasts, but that the style or look remains relevant decades later.” The duo is keen to highlight the capability of vintage or recycled clothing as more than just everyday wear. “Being Spring Fashion Week, we’re showing cocktail hour looks and styles that hopefully inspire people when it comes to dressing for the Spring Racing Carnival.”

I myself have bought vintage and recycled clothing for years, for various reasons. Quite simply it’s nice to have unique garments, which are often well made and are of high quality fabrics. The times when I have bought the “latest fashion” item from a highstreet store, I find that it dates faster or frustratingly falls apart after a few run-ins with my toploader. Sure, with vintage clothing you’re purchasing second-hand goods - but this should be reflected in the price you pay. Provided we’re not talking about undergarments and a stop in to the drycleaners is made, I say it’s game on.

RAW Sustainable Fashion Parade, aside from raising awareness on the environmental benefits of purchasing from stores or labels that use organic or vintage fabrics to create stylish and on-trend clothing, will also be a great opportunity to view the works of an array of local independent designers and retailers.

Ruby Red Dress is located at 3 King St, Prahran (Ladies fashion only) and last week opened its sister store of the same name (Men’s and Ladies Fashion) at 19C Carlisle St, St Kilda.

RAW Sustainable Fashion Parade will take place at Fix Docklands at Waterfront City from 9:00 – 11:00pm on Friday 5th September 2008. Tickets available online at moshtix.com.au or directly at the venue.
