When the models walked down off the front of the runway, past the photographers and out the front door at Central Pier last Sunday night, the Independent Runway was over and along with it L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival 2008 . After looming so long on the fashion calendar like a beacon of light in the distance, like all good festivals of fun it was over in a flash. With the respite and time provided by its conclusion we are now able to step back and offer you this little snapshot of what went down.

PARIS RUNWAY4 2008
	Paris Runway 4 was characterised by warm winter colours and standout regal Aurelio Costarella dresses. Nicolla Finetti came out charging to the Midnight Juggernauts and Mad Cortes got the sexy librarian thing going while accessorising with large framed glasses.
PARIS RUNWAY 5 2008
Paris Runway 5 brought Melbourne back to more familiar dark winter hues. I love the NOM*d and Claude Maus style – something to wear in a Blade Runner-esqe, post-apocalyptic LA wasteland – while Karen Walker harked back to sunny afternoon strolls in simpler times with her collection of dresses.
PARIS RUNWAY 7 2008
	Paris Runway 7 did not fail to live up to its prime time slot. There were the Material Boy ninjas and TV catsuits, yet all was surpassed in spectacle by the wearable art of Romance was Born and its symbolic birth from the apple of life – the forbidden fruit.
INDEPENDENT RUNWAY 2008
Launching with a live performance from Plug-in City, the Independent Runway continued with themes encountered throughout the week of androgyny and the genderless and played out to a soundtrack including Gang of Four, Feist remixed, the Rolling Stones, the Presets, Simian Mobile Disco and the Knife.
The nightly congregation of stylers down at Central Pier before the runway shows offered a great backdrop for a week which was at times inspired.
