IF THE SHOES FIT:: MAFIA
Words :: Alastair McCann  |  26-07-07
content_mafia02.jpg For many of us, it's all about the shoes.  This is no different for MAFIA, Melbourne's original sneaker Queen.  Now onboard the sneakerfreaker.com juggernaut to provide its female voice, the self-proclaimed sneaker junkie is leading the way for girls everywhere lighting up sneakers.  This coupled with her established place in Melbourne's party scene, running her own night $crilla and DJing for more than a decade, makes MAFIA our winner of the ultimate lifestyle choices award.

MAFIA you've kind of got a massive sneaker collection.  What's going on?

Yeah it's about 200 deep at the moment.  When I was 22 I started making my own money through DJing so I had the disposable cash so I was just hitting up any sneaker I wanted.  And then it just kind of blossomed and went out of control.

No shit.  Do you think it's strange being female and so into sneakers?

No.  Girls are so known for loving shoes and it's a shoe.  Like it's a sneaker yeah, but it's a fashion thing too.  That was the interesting thing about doing the exhibition because I was the only girl, and I got a lot of attention from the media who were so intrigued why a girl would want to be into it all.  They thought it was a real male dominated thing.  But it doesn't have to be.

Was that the Classics to Customs exhibition at NGV that just finished?

Yeah.   I submitted 11 pairs for the exhibition in total.  Everyone was worried cos they weren't going to have them for a year, but I was like fuck it.

Cool.  And what about the music angle to sneaker culture - is it hip hop that you play or are your tastes broader?

I play friendly-on-the-ear music.  I hit my 30s and was like I'm not going to bother being cool anymore and play underground hip hop because no one dances to it.  So I started playing all the crap shit that I loved from the 90s and it goes off.  I'm all about getting the girls dancing because once you get the girls dancing its over.

So is girls dancing what goes down at $crilla Revolver Thursdays?

Absolutely.  Party jams all night..

They had a story about this (with MAFIA) on RALPH TV the other night. I definitely enjoyed your version better :P
