WHATS HAPPENING GAMEBOY/GAMEGIRL!
Words :: Alastair McCann  |  11-06-07

GameboyGamegirlIf you feel like you haven't danced enough lately, Gameboy/Gamegirl might just have the answers.  Their infectious blend of hip-hop and electro is guaranteed to get your custom high-tops moving and leave you smiling from ear to ear.  So with that in mind we jumped at the opportunity to sit down on a blowy Melbourne day for chilli dogs and the chance to talk about having fun, resurgent 90s trends and their forthcoming remix laden EP.

Your music comes across like you're having a lot fun with it.  Is that what its about for you?

Kate: Well, the song ‘Fruit Salad' is about gay bang gangs, which we only found out after we wrote it.  It was supposed to just be a fun dance track not really about anything, but then it turns out it's about something a little more sinister.

Tranter: Yeah but we just like to have fun, mess around. We don't take it seriously.

Jess: We are all about fun.  We're trying to do something slightly different that's fun and for ourselves more than anything.

What's your take on the current fashion scene?

Jess: The fashion that's all really popular at the moment is all this 90s stuff.  All these leggings and oversized t-shirts and all that kind of thing.  And I mean you hear it in the music - all the new Cut Copy stuff has a real 90s vibe to it.  Everything comes in waves, it all disappears and comes back again.

Do you find fashion relating back to your music then?  Is the Kitsuné Maison approach - who do music and clothes - the way forward?

Kate: I think in the type of genre that we're in and that they're in, fashion and music are just totally interwoven.  It's always about image I guess with music but especially in this kind of scene.

Jess: There are so many clothing brands out there just doing crazy stuff and it's a way to work together.  For us we've just got on to these guys George Terrific who are just starting out.  We want to use them to kind of get our music out there a bit more I guess, get their clothes out there and hopefully collaborate to do merch and stuff like that.

Tranter: Yeah they've been amazing really.  They made the clothes Katy and Jess wore in the shoot as well as Miami's tee. They've got the right attitude and for us we just want to get involved with different projects happening in Melbourne because there's so much going on.

Sweet, sounds perfect.  So what should we expect from the upcoming EP then?

Kate: Well, we're calling it ‘Golden Ghetto Sex' so that gives you a kind of idea of what's coming.  No not really... we're thinking of having 5 or 6 songs on the EP and then 5 or 6 remixes,  one of each song.

Miami: A very big EP.

Kate: Very extended.

Tranter:  Its just gonna be pretty much unadulterated rap with the disco beat.  We can't really rap so its just like 14 year olds with ADD trying to rap and dancing around a lot in clubs they weren't allowed into.

Finally, you mentioned the 90s things going on here now, so what was cool for Gameboy/Gamegirl back in the day?

Tranter: Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch definitely.  That's where I get most of my influence from.

Jess: Vidiot, T-shirt Teabag, ABC Kids basically, 90210 of course, happy pants, stackhats - they became compulsory - yoyos, INXS, Rosanne, Keanu.

Kate: We'll stop now..
